Most online hydrocarbon measurements in water have difficulties in the lower ranges. This unique non-fouling optical instrument can easily detect and measure the low concentrations in water. The method used is displayed in the figure below.
Aromatic hydrocarbons are detected in a stream of water which falls through an open chamber; the stream does explicitly not contact, dirty or foul the optical windows used, by using a proprietary air curtain system. This system measures the fluorescence of the hydrocarbon components in the water. Fluorescence takes place if a molecule absorbs the light energy at a specific wavelength and sends it out with a larger wavelength.
